Join us for a lively discussion of one of our favourite titles on the Red Tent Sisters' book shelves: Fresh Milk. We have met to discuss this book a couple of times in the past and it has always been an invigorating discussion! "While countless breastfeeding guides crowd bookshelves, not one of them speaks to women with anything approaching bestselling author Fiona Giles's level of intimacy and vitality. In Fresh Milk, through a provokative collection of stories, memories, and personal accounts, Giles uncovers the myths and truths of the lactating breast. From the young mother grappling with the bewildering trappings of maternity wear to the woman who finds herself surprisingly aroused by new sensations, and the modern dad who learns the ins and outs of breastfeeding, the portraits in Giles's eye-opening book offer a funny, wise and comforting resource for women - and even their friends and partners who have had, or expect, intimate experiences with the pleasures and pain of lactation. By turns poignant and informative, sexy and witty, empathic and empowering, Fresh Milk delivers everything we wanted to know about breastfeeding that our mothers never told us."

Join us for discussion of a new addition to the Red Tent Sister's parenting book selection: Under Pressure: Putting the child back in childhood, by Carl Honore - au;thor of the bestselling In Praise of Slow. This book was recommended at the last parenting book club by a fellow conscious parent. "From the bestselling author of In Praise of Slow comes a fascinating and urgent look at childhood today and how we are raising a generation of over-managed, overprotected and overindulged children. Carl Honore explains how our modern approach to child-rearing is backfiring: our kids are fatter, more myopic, more prone to injury, more depressed and more medicated than previous generations. Using startling anecdotes about obsessive parents (including one about the father of a tennis player who drugged all his child's opponents), solid research and personal insight, Honore shows how we are going wrong from the classroom to the home, dispels myths and rallies for change in clear and persuasive prose." Parenting Book Club events are FREE and last an hour and a half. Babies are welcome. If you choose to purchase the book, rather than getting it from a friend or your local library, please consider supporting Red Tent Sisters with your purchase, rather than your local big box store. Thank you for your support.

During our time here at Red Tent Sisters we have found one theme that has come up again and again when talking to parents. It didn't matter whether they were new or experienced, it seems as though a lot of the parents we have spoken to have experienced some sort of guilt since having children. We did a quick Google search and were overwhelmed with the number of articles, blogs, and products we found all centered on the idea of parenting guilt and how it can be overcome. We then did a search through the University of Toronto library and found some interesting information we'd love to share with you! Come on out to the shop on Monday, Aug. 17th at 2:30 and we'll share what we've found. It'll be a great opportunity for you to also share your experience of parenting and maybe learn a tip or two from another parent on how to cope when you feel like you just can't do it all. This meetup is FREE, as it's being led by Jenn and Jess (Amy's occupational therapy students). Hope to see you there, as it's our last week at the store! :)

Join us for a discussion about one of our favourite parenting books - Meredith's Small's Our Babies, Ourselves. "In this ground-breaking book, anthropologist Meredith Small reveals her remarkable findings in the new science of ethnopediatrics. Professor Small joins pediatricians, child-development researchers, and anthropologists across the country who are studying to what extent the way we parent our infants is based on biological needs and to what extent it is based on culture - and how sometimes what is culturally dictated may not be what's best for babies. Should an infant be encouraged to sleep alone? Is breast-feeding better than bottle-feeding, or is that just a myth of the nineties? How much time should pass before a mother picks up her crying infant? And how important is it really to a baby's development to talk and sing to him or her? These are but a few of the important questions Small addresses, and the answers not only are suprising but may even change the way we raise children." Parenting Book Club events are FREE and last an hour and a half. Babies are welcome. If you choose to purchase the book please consider supporting Red Tent Sisters with your purchase rather than your local big box bookstore. Thank you for your support.

Hello parents! Jenn and I (Jessica) are two Occupational Therapy students from the University of Toronto who have joined the Red Tent Sisters for our final fieldwork placement. You'll find us around the Red Tent from now until August 21st. Now that you know a little more about us, we hope you'll join us on Monday behind the shop, in the Langford Parkette for a Parenting Meetup & Playdate. It'll be a great opportunity to get to know each other and to brainstorm some ideas for the Parenting Meetup group for the rest of the summer. We're really hoping some of you can share your expertise and volunteer to lead a session (or two!). Bring the little ones, and come on out and have some fun. Here's a map of the parks location if you're unsure: Map of Langford Parkette See you there! Jess & Jenn
